I had the pleasure of seeing "Cantata Criolla" performed by the Boston Symphony last April [2019]. This piece was composed by the late, Venezuelan composer Antonio Estevez (1954-1988). His story is quite dramatic, as is with many important Venezuelans of the 20th century. What struck me about this work is how it reflects many of the rhythms and chords used by Aaron Copland, one of his teachers, yet it is decidedly Venezuelan in its adoption of Joropo and other Venezuelan rhythms.
In this painting, I focused on what I imagined would be the wild jungle in which this story would take place. The circles are rhythmic reminders across the canvas as the crescendo towards the edge.
This work is painted with professional acrylic paint on canvas. The painting is sealed with a UV protectant varnish to keep the colors vibrant for its lifetime.
This painting is not framed because it is painted on the sides and the canvas is 1.5 inches deep!
