Translation III of Piano Concerto No. 2 (Shostakovich) - Original Painting on Canvas

This painting is part of an ongoing series inspired by Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2—a piece notably lighter and brighter than his earlier works, and one that finally feels unburdened by the pain and oppression of Stalin’s rule. When I listen to the second movement, I still envision expanses of white, but there’s also a quiet playfulness in the music’s phrasing that I translated through subtle, expressive mark-making.

In this series, I’ve simplified the color palette, working primarily in soft grays and blues. A touch of gold and yellow glows beneath the cloudy, layered background—like a ray of light breaking through mist, capturing the music’s fleeting warmth.
